Letter from the Editor May 2013

Kayla Mossien

A lot can happen in six years. Babies are born. Families grow. Friendships form. And goals are met. One such goal for me was becoming Editor-in-Chief of PARENTGUIDE News. While six years might seem like a blip of time in the grand scheme of things, each day, month and year that has passed since 2007 have profoundly impacted my personal and professional life. As such, I’m sad to say this is my final issue.

Before I say my final au revoir as Editor, however, I present to you the May issue— one of my favorites for its celebratory theme thanks to the debut of our annual Birthday Directory. Be inspired to get festive with its numerous listings of venues and entertainers for all special occasions. Not sure how many classmates to invite or whether the gathering should be co-ed? Once you’re booked and prepped to party, flip to Kerry Luksic’s “Birthday Party Etiquette.” The article offers the proper protocol to follow and faux pas to avoid when throwing your youngster’s fete.

Other highlights this month include “Getting Ready for Camp” by the trusted American Camp Association (ACA). Whether you’ve enrolled your camper, or you’re still choosing from the wide variety of camps in our Camp Directory, turn to the feature for guidance on packing for the jaunt. Be it day camp or sleepaway, the ACA helps prepare you and you child for their summer journey, including essential items to bring and which ones to leave at home.

But I digress. My tenure at PARENTGUIDE News has truly been an adventure. And as I leave, my feelings are bittersweet. While I’m sad to say goodbye to fabulous readers and a loving and dedicated staff, I am thrilled to have been part of such a special publication. The team I’ve worked alongside has inspired, taught, comforted and grounded me along the way. To all of you, I am most deeply indebted.

As we know, life brings with it many changes. I pass along the proverbial torch to Rachel Kalina. Having started our journey at PARENTGUIDE News together on the same day, I know firsthand that Rachel will do an outstanding job bringing you compelling content to fulfill your wants and needs. Trust me...you’re in great hands. I wish her all of the happiness and wisdom that the position has given me.

As always, be happy and healthy!
