Letter from the Editor June 2015

Donald McDermott

June has always been one of my favorite months. Not just because my birthday happens to arrive in June, either. For me, it always signaled a changing of the times. Spring turns to summer. School days end and summer fun begins. This year, June becomes even more special to me personally, as I get to write the Editor's Letter of PARENTGUIDE News for the very first time.

In my time here I have seen more changes in the world than I can possibly count. I have seen lives end and new ones begin. And in the proudest moment of my life I even got to go from reading about being a father, to becoming one. No matter how many things have changed, PARENTGUIDE News has remained a constant. It is beyond special to me. I hope that there is a number of you, our readers who share this same sentiment.

With change in the air, it's the ideal time to start looking ahead. June brings warmer weather, backyard barbecues, and quality time with the family. For your little ones, June means the start of summer vacation!

Jess Michaels, the Director of Communication for the American Camp Association, New York and New Jersey, makes your child's transition to summer camp even easier in "8 Tips for Preparing Your Child for a Successful Camp Experience."

If you are thinking about doing a little traveling this summer, discover why "The Big Easy" isn't just for adults anymore in an eye opening travel piece by Merrie Stone that is all about New Orleans. From amazing foods to unforgettable attractions, it will be easy to understand why New Orleans is quickly becoming a new hot spot for families.

Another tradition to look forward to at this time of year is Father's Day. Find a few totally unique gift ideas for the special guy in your home by checking out our brand new Dad's Corner column! Along with my co-editor and trusted friend Samantha Chan, I look forward to growing with you and the publication. I also hope to live up to this very special position that I have been given, as well as living up to all of the amazingly talented editors-in-chief here before us. Most important of all, I will strive to continue to uphold the level of excellence you have come to expect from PARENTGUIDE News!

Happy Father's Day! Enjoy the issue.
