The biggest part of my own personal weight loss journey got kicked into high gear just about a year and a half ago. The new year...2010...had just begun. I was tipping the scales at 335 pounds back then and desperately needed to do something drastic. As my trainer would say, "You have been doing it your way for a long time now. Clearly your way isn't working." There is nothing more important to me in this world than my daughter Meghan. I wanted to get healthy to make sure that I was around to watch her grow up...to set a positive example for her...and to be there to keep her from going down the same sad, lonely, horrible roads that I did. But there was no way to do any of those things being the way I was and weighing what I weighed. So I decided enough was enough. With my trainer Jonathan by my side, we kick-started a brand new plan. Aside from ampiing up our already intense workouts (heavy doses of cardio, running as often as possible and yoga....yes, yoga), when I was out of the gym I would do whatever I could to keep myself active. I would also limit my food intake to absolutely no more than 2,000 calories a day, write down everything that I was eating throughout each day and weigh myself once a week. That last one was tough for me. And the final two components of my new attack plan? The first was to start a daily blog so that anyone who wanted to could check in on my progress. The thought there was that it become a tool that would help keep me honest. Because let's face it, who wants to get on the scale and then have to tell everyone you know that you gained weight? The blog also gave me a forum to share my thoughts, voice my opinions and get me writing creatively again. I have truly always enjoyed writing...

...but over the years I have let life get in the way too much and I have kind of put it on the back burner. Committing to write SOMETHING every single day has definitely been a big help to me. Now last but certainly not least...I needed a goal to train for. Something at the end of the rainbow that the new and improved me could tackle. I had heard about an event called "The Warrior Dash" at that time was being held nine months away in the fall of 2010. It was a 3 mile course that included ten obstacles...and the website described it as "the craziest frickin day of your whole life." I knew right then and thre that I had found what I was looking for. So I titled my blog "The Warrior in Weighting" (I love a good play on words) and I began my new journey. Nine months later...just a week before the Warrior Dash...I was 100 pounds lighter (YAY!). Unfortunately, I was also in a hospital bed (BOO!). Apparently I had developed a hernia years before that all the extra weight had been holding in place. So it was never detected. My surgeon called my recovery "miraculous" and told me that if I hadn't had lost the weight I probably wouldn't have survived the surgery. Always nice to hear when your hard work pays off. So I had actually saved my own life...but I also missed the Warrior Dash. And why am I sharing this with you now you might ask? Well because it is that time again. The Warrior Dash is being held in Windham, New York on August 13th...exactly one month from today. I am stronger, healthier and even better than I was last year...and one month from now I will be on the field of battle with some good friends...ready to take care of some unfinished business. The year-long "weight" will be over...and I can finally call myself a warrior. Bring it on!
