Not Your Typical Saturday
Well the precautions have been taken, the emergency kits prepared. Prayers have been spoken...some silently, some not...and my house is as secure as it is going to be. At the moment I am sitting in my little home office, listening to the winds pick up as they whip up and down Fire Avenue outside. Most of the day today was spent preparing for Irene again. Definitely sounds like she is on her way. It didn't look like that for most of my Saturday. It was breezy and rainy here in my little corner of Long Island, but never looked like it was going to turn into much. I wondered to myself more than once if we were just being paranoid with everything we were doing. Extra food, extra water, plenty of gas in the car. Candles, batteries, flashlights. Tape on the windows and a bag of clothes packed in case we need to leave suddenly. Sounds a wee bit like overkill doesn't it? Well that was earlier today. Now with the sounds of the wind and rain picking up outside, and clips of the destruction Irene has cause up the East Coast so far on the news earlier tonight, I am starting to wonder if we did ENOUGH to prepare. Only time will tell I guess. They say the worst of it is supposed to come in the middle of the night tonight.
I am hoping that we wake up tomorrow and things are looking a little less grim than they predicted. I hope that everyone reading this...and even the people not reading this...are somewhere safe and secure. One thing I DID do for myself today...in an act of utter defiance to mother nature (and stir craziness from being home for two straight days) was go out for a run this afternoon. Lori thinks I am nuts of course. But she also knows that when I get something in my head it is easier to just let me do it then to go back and forth over it a million times. Just a quick mile and a quarter in the pouring, humid rain. Down Fire Avenue to Meghan's school and back. Good for a quick 300 or so calorie burn...but worth so much more to me personally. Always found something special with jogging in the rain. It shows you who wants it the most...and at the beginning of a storm? yeah...I didn't expect to see many people...and I didn't. LOL. Now it is time to head down to the safety of the man cave. Lori and Meghan are snuggled up on the couch watching a movie while I will burn off some nervous energy with my deck of cards. Have a good night all...stay well...talk to you tomorrow!
