New Year, New Decade
I still can't believe that we are a few weeks into a new year already. Not only a new year, but a brand-new decade to boot. It really amazes me how much more quickly time seems to pass as I get older. Seems like just yesterday it was New Year's Eve of 1999, and we were all getting ready for the new millenium to arrive. Then all of a sudden the craziness of Y2K subsided and the past decade was underway. Back then, the New York Yankees were building a dynasty for a new generation with Joe Girardi as a player instead of the manager, shows like Friends and ER were heading up "must see TV" Thursdays on NBC and director James Cameron was still being recognized for Titanic long before Avatar was even a thought.
As for me, when the decade kicked off in the year 2000, I was in a relationship with a woman who had two kids, Jesse and Cody, two awesome little boys whom I loved spending as much time with as possible. That relationship gave me a taste of what it was like to be a father figure. It also made me wonder what it would be like for me if I were ever lucky enough to have a child of my own.
And now, as the door opens on our brand-new decade and I look back on the one we are leaving behind, not only did I get to experience fatherhood for myself, but I am thrilled to report that I am the very proud father of a beautiful little 6-year-old girl. She turned out to be all I could have ever asked for. I can honestly say that I am equally excited and nervous to see what the next ten years will bring.
