Looking Back...But Pushing Forward
While browsing through Facebook earlier today, I noticed that someone created a page called "You know you are from Astoria if you remember," and then the next sentence is up to you. Well for those of you who don't already know this, Astoria Queens is my hometown. Spent the bulk of my life there. My family and my friends still live there in fact. It was the site of some of my favorite moments...as well as the site of some of my less than most shining moments too. All in all it was a great place to grow up though. Lots of kids around all the time, just about every ethnic background you could think of too...which also meant you could pretty much find just about any type of food you were in the mood for just by walking a few feet in any given direction. Seems so much different from the way things are today from a parenting standpoint. Back when I was growing up my dad worked nights. In the summers he would stroll in at about 7am....tell my brother and I to finish up our cereal...and get the f*ck out! That's a direct quote. If you know my dad, you know that is so not an understatement either....lol. We would be booted out of the house at the crack of dawn, and told to come home when dinner was ready, or when the streetlights came on...the choice was ours. That was pretty much all the contact I had with my parents for the day too. There were no cell phones, no IM's, emails or text messages to be had.
We were cut off from each other more or less...and trusted to stay out all day, while having fun. remaining in one piece and not getting into too much trouble. Let me tell you...those are some of the most beloved memories of my childhood. HOWEVER...call me a wimp or a punk if you want...but I would NEEEEEVER handle Meghan that same way. Out all day on her own with no way of getting in touch with her? Sorry, nope. But here is to Astoria...thanks for the memories....I salute you! Not that I am not enjoying my new life out here at the tail-end of Long Island tho...because I definitely am. This area is much quieter than my old stomping grounds. The GOOD thing about the peace and quiet out here is that you can get your workouts done outside with little to no interruption. I more or less walk the 2 miles to the train every day without seeing another person...and the same goes for my runs along Fire Avenue in the evening. And speaking of workouts, I have one waiting for me downstairs in just a little while. Been focusing on cardio routines to help burn the fat off, but I have to tell you I am dyyyying to lift some weights...and that is going to be the focus this evening. Well I hope everyone is having a good night and a good week so far. And if anyone reading this DID happen to grow up in Astoria with me....thanks so much for helping me create so many memories!
Okay, I have done this a few times already, but before I sign off for the night I want to say one last time a VERY Happy 40th Birthday to Miss Donna Marie Hayes. One of my absolute best friends in the entire world and one of the greatest people that God ever created. Hard to believe we have been friends for close to 30 years already. Looking forward to 30 more. Hope your birthday was as great as you are!
G'nite all....more tomorrow!
